Health & Wellbeing

PE

The development of skills and knowledge of health and wellbeing sits at the very core of all learning experiences at Upland Primary. We strive to ensure that the children develop the knowledge, understanding and skills which they need now and in the future.

We believe that embedding health and wellbeing across learning, whether this takes place within the school, other learning environments, at home or in the wider community is crucial to healthy development and life-styles.

The aspects of health and well-being which the school promotes are;

  • Mental and emotional well-being
  • Social wellbeing
  • Physical activity and sport.
  • Physical education
  • Physical wellbeing

Physical education

At Upland, we aim to provide an inclusive PE curriculum that pupils from Nursery to Year 6 not only enjoy but also allows them to experience a range of activities that help them to develop their health, fitness and wellbeing. Through Physical Education we aim to develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding, so that they can perform with increasing confidence and competence in a range of physical activities. We aim to improve health and well-being, promote active participation and lifelong learning, and for each child to fulfil their potential.

Beyond merely a subject, we believe that participation in sporting activity is a key element of developing a school in which pupils are proud of the community in which they belong. Therefore, great emphasis is placed upon additional sporting opportunities beyond the lesson within after-school clubs, inter-house and inter-school competition as well as directly trying to support the local clubs within the area and our feeder schools. We believe this links directly with our school’s personal attribute of teamwork and is another way in which we can positively engage with our local community and be active citizens within it.

Wellbeing and PSHE at Upland Primary School

At Upland Primary School, our children are at the heart of everything we do. We believe that children learn best when they feel safe, valued and emotionally secure. Our wellbeing and PSHE curriculum is designed to support every child to understand themselves, build positive relationships and develop the confidence and resilience they need for both school and life beyond the classroom.

We recognise that children arrive at Upland with different experiences, strengths and starting points. Through careful planning and strong relationships, we support children to step confidently into their stretch zone—challenging themselves, taking appropriate risks and developing independence in a safe and supportive environment.

Our Approach to Wellbeing

From Nursery through to Year 6, wellbeing is woven into daily school life. We help children to:

  • Understand their emotions and recognise how they feel

  • Develop strategies to regulate emotions and manage challenges

  • Build resilience, determination and a positive mindset

  • Make safe, healthy choices for themselves and others

  • Develop respect for others, the school community and the wider world

Children are encouraged to take responsibility for their own wellbeing, to seek help when needed and to understand the importance of kindness, empathy and respect.

PSHE and Emotional Wellbeing Curriculum

Our PSHE curriculum is delivered through the myHappymind Plus programme, which is fully aligned with the statutory requirements for Relationships, Health and PSHE education and backed by NHS-informed research

The curriculum is carefully sequenced and progressive, ensuring children revisit and build upon key concepts as they move through the school. Lessons are taught regularly and adapted to meet the needs of each cohort, ensuring learning is relevant, age-appropriate and meaningful.

Through this curriculum, children learn to:

  • Understand how their brain works and how emotions affect behaviour

  • Build self-esteem, confidence and a sense of achievement

  • Develop positive friendships and healthy relationships

  • Learn how to keep themselves safe, including online and in the wider community

  • Understand the importance of physical and mental health

  • Develop an awareness of their role within society and the wider world

Emotional literacy and resilience are at the core of our approach, helping children to recognise that all feelings are valid and that challenges can be managed with the right strategies and support

Preparing Children for Life

Our wellbeing and PSHE curriculum plays a key role in preparing children for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of modern life. As children move through the school, learning becomes increasingly sophisticated, supporting them to:

  • Make informed, safe decisions

  • Show respect and understand the ‘rule of law’

  • Manage change and transition with confidence

  • Develop independence, self-awareness and responsibility

  • Understand how to contribute positively to their community

By the time children leave Upland, they are emotionally literate, adaptable and equipped with the tools they need to thrive both academically and personally.

Working in Partnership with Parents

We value strong partnerships with parents and carers. Our PSHE and wellbeing curriculum is delivered with transparency, and resources can be shared so families understand what children are learning and how this can be supported at home. We believe that when school and home work together, children’s wellbeing is strengthened.

If you would like further information about our wellbeing and PSHE curriculum, or to discuss how we support individual children, please contact the school office—we are always happy to help.

Relationships education

Our PSHE curriculum covers all of the statutory requirements for RSE within each year group. Effective Relationships & Sex Education (RSE) is crucial to developing and maintaining emotional and physical health. Our curriculum is designed to ensure pupils receive their sex education in the wider context of relationships, and are prepared for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.

We also support the children to develop a range of appropriate personal skills to keep themselves healthy and safe, particularly within different relationships.

Throughout their time at Upland the children spend time developing an understanding of a range of values and moral issues including the importance of family life.  Children are taught biological facts related to human growth and development, including reproduction and the importance of healthy relationships.

We believe that the teaching of sex education should be complementary and supportive to the role of parents. Below is an overview of the lesson content as well as a link to the supporting parental workshop materials.
