History

Marcus Garvey: a people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.

History at Upland aims to create specialists - children who are able to make sense of the world, make connections and ask questions about the stories that they hear. We believe that history plays an essential role in children's understanding of Britain's past and our links to the wider world. We deliver history lessons which inspire children to want to know more about the past and to think and act as historians. Through each historic time period children will have the opportunity to investigate and interpret the past, understand chronology, build an overview of Britain’s past as well as that of the wider world, and to be able to communicate historically. This is achieved by developing children’s disciplinary and substantive knowledge throughout the History curriculum with a focus on three main concepts: Innovation, Empire and People. When children leave Upland they will have an excellent knowledge and understanding of a range of historical periods. The ability to reflect, debate, discuss and evaluate the past by questioning and using historical evidence.  As well as taking these ideas and being able to communicate them confidently to a range of audiences. Children are encouraged to use the Upland Museum, handle artefacts, find evidence, weigh it up and reach their own conclusions.

Geography

Geography at Upland aims to inspire a life-long curiosity and fascination in the world.  Our curriculum is designed to widen children’s understanding of the natural world and those that live in it through developing knowledge through diverse places and people generating an interest in social, economic and environmental issues within a constantly changing world.  We deliver geography lessons which motivate children to want to know more about the world we live in, providing a greater sense of appreciation and care for the Earth we all share.  Through each geographical topic children will have the opportunity to enquire and investigate places as well as considering what the world could look like in the future and what they can do to influence change. Outdoor learning is key to understanding the world above, around and below. Practical work helps children make connections between the natural and human made world.

RE

At Upland we aim to provide and stretch children’s education by provoking challenging questions about meaning and purpose in life, beliefs about God, ultimate reality, issues of right and wrong and what it means to be human.  We develop resilience by posing challenging questions about beliefs about God, ultimate reality, issues of right and wrong and what it means to show human kindness. In RE, pupils learn about and develop respect for religions and worldviews in local, national and global contexts, to discover, explore and consider different answers to these questions. At Upland, we develop a systematic knowledge and understanding of a range of religions and worldviews, enabling pupils to develop their own ideas, values and identities, whilst celebrating and respecting their own views and beliefs as well as those of others.

At Upland Primary School, we value the importance of Religious Education in helping children understand a range of beliefs, develop respect for others, and explore their own values. However, in line with statutory guidance, parents and carers have the right to withdraw their child from all or part of RE.
If you wish to request a withdrawal, please email admin@upland.bexley.sch.uk at the start of each academic year, clearly stating your reasons. Parents can request withdrawal from all RE lessons or specific celebrations, but not from individual religions within the curriculum. This is in line with government guidance which allows withdrawal from the subject as a whole, but not selective withdrawal from particular faiths.

Once your request is received, a member of the Senior Leadership Team will be in touch to discuss your concerns, explain the RE curriculum in more detail, and support you in making an informed decision. Our RE curriculum is available on the school website for your reference.

Please note that this process must be repeated annually should you wish for your child to continue to be withdrawn from RE.

Children who are withdrawn from RE will be supervised in another classroom and provided with meaningful alternative work during that time.
