The Arts
At Upland Primary School, we value the arts both as subjects in their own right and the immense role that they play in the wellbeing and development of children. We also recognise the transferable skills that children learn and develop through the arts, which have been proved to raise standards across all areas.
The Arts
Art
At Upland Primary School we are proud of the artwork our children create. Through art lessons and topic work teachers give children the opportunity to develop their Art skills in key areas such as drawing, clay, textiles, sculpture, painting, printmaking and collage and then apply these skills to create a final piece. As well as this, art topics have an artist or a designer focus and children learn key facts about them and their work and make comparisons. These areas are developed continuously throughout the school from foundation stage through to Year 6.
Music
Music in Upland Primary School is a highly practical subject based around singing and playing instruments while building up the skills, vocabulary and knowledge that will help them enjoy, perform and access music from many different genres. Curriculum music is mainly taught in weekly lessons by our Specialist Music Teacher with instrumental teachers coming in to teach violin, clarinet, flute, recorder, oboe, trumpet, guitar, keyboard, drum kit and djembe whose parents opt to pay for extra small group or individual lessons.
Spanish
Due to it being the 4th most spoken language worldwide, and the doors this can open for our children, Spanish is our chosen language at Upland.
We are proud to work with Language Angels and teach Spanish for at least 10 minutes daily to all children in Key Stage 2.
Our MFL curriculum is a progressive curriculum which constantly builds on what the children have previously learnt and is designed to develop children’s basic skills in speaking and listening, reading and writing, with the main focus being on practical communication, whilst meeting the requirements of the National Curriculum and laying the foundations for learning a language at KS3. In doing so we believe our languages curriculum opens pupils up to a variety of cultures and helps to foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world.
