Behaviour and Relationships

At Upland, we believe that nurturing a positive school environment is essential for the development of our students. Our Behaviour and Relationship Policy reflects our commitment to creating a place where students not only excel academically but also thrive emotionally and socially.

Restorative Approaches: Building Bridges, Not Barriers

Central to our philosophy is the use of restorative approaches. We understand that conflicts and disagreements are a natural part of life and we use restorative practices to resolve issues, restore relationships and promote understanding. Instead of punitive measures, we focus on building relationships to engage in purposeful dialogue, empathy and reconciliation, ensuring that every member of our school community has a voice and the opportunity to grow from their experiences.

Recognising the Positives: The Power of Recognition

We believe in the power of positivity. Our Recognition Boards serve as a vibrant testament to this belief. These boards are adorned with the achievements and accomplishments of our students. By highlighting and celebrating the positives, we encourage a culture of appreciation, motivation and pride in one another's successes.

 Self-Regulation Techniques: Empowering Students

Empowering our students to become responsible individuals is at the core of our educational approach. We teach self-regulation techniques that enable students to manage their emotions, make informed decisions and develop a strong sense of personal responsibility.

By teaching self-regulation techniques explicitly and modelling their use, we enable our children to be mindful of their own feelings and work towards regulating them independently. This supplements the Wellbeing work which is covered in our PSHE curriculum. At the beginning of every half term, we have an explicit Wellbeing lesson. The theme of this lesson is revisited each week at the beginning of the PSHE lessons that half term to embed the ideas and strategies that have been covered to help support our children’s mental health.

By giving our children the tools to manage their feelings and wellbeing, we aim to support all children in developing positive lifelong mental and physical health while at the same improving wider outcomes such as behaviour and persistence.
